Een nieuwe muziekvideo-website genaamd PluggedIn doet een beetje stof opwaaien. Deze dienst, die het bekijken van (al dan niet HD) muziekvideo’s in de vorm van clips of concerten mogelijk maakt, wordt namelijk door TechCruch al gauw bestempeld als de Hulu voor muziekvideo’s. Is dit een goede ontwikkeling? Niet als we zien dat er toch veel kritiek op PluggedIn is. Maar, er is ook hoop.
Kritiek
De voornaamste kritiek op PluggedIn is dat de content nog niet buiten de Verenigde Staten en Canada gezien kan worden. Stan Schroeder van Mashable, toch niet het minste weblog, is daar zelfs zo boos over dat hij er niet eens een review over wil/kan schrijven. Ten tweede meldt TechCrunch dat er op PluggedIn geen mogelijkheid tot het embedden van de video’s is. Waarom dat zo is weet ik niet, maar het lijkt mij een cruciaal onderdeel van een videosite om je content te promoten. Verder zou het social networking-aspect minimaal zijn uitgevoerd.
Zelf heb ik ook enige kritiek: ik stuitte op een Nederlandse banners onderaan de pagina, terwijl ik nog niet eens toegang heb tot de video’s! Het lijkt me duidelijk waar de prioriteiten liggen bij PluggedIn.
Gelijkenissen met Hulu
In de titel van het TechCrunch artikel wordt PluggedIn vergeleken met Hulu. Dit is bijvoorbeeld goed te zien aan die vervelende US-only restrictie. Maar bovenal is het een portal dat net als Hulu voorzien is van kwaliteitsvideo’s door deals aan te gaan met grote spelers, in het geval van PluggedIn de platenmaatschappijen EMI, Sony BMG en Universal Music Group. Maar, door de rechtenkwesties van deze maatschappijen is het dus nog niet mogelijk deze filmpjes buiten de Verenigde Staten te bekijken, iets wat je niet zou hebben met een user generated content-platform.
Centralisering
Echter, het probleem met UGC is dat het vrijwel meteen zorgt voor een grote brij aan filmpjes die zelden iets toevoegen aan het medialandschap. Initiatieven als Hulu en PluggedIn zorgen voor een platform dat content plaatst van gerenomeerde artiesten en film- en televisiemakers. Dit gaat ook het illegale kopiëren auteursrechtelijke content tegen. Je zou kunnen stellen dat PluggedIn en Hulu voor een centralisering van gewilde content zorgen doordat de grote bedrijven daar toestemming voor geven. Hierdoor hoef je nooit meer hele afleveringen van series op YouTube te bekijken (recentelijk zijn alle illegaal verspreide afleveringen van The Simpsons en Family Guy van YouTube verwijderd).
Trend?
Wat me nog meer opviel is dat deze centralisering wellicht een trend wordt. In de tijden van Web 2.0, waar decentralisatie centraal staat, is er misschien weer een roep naar authenticiteit van echte professionals die netjes betaald krijgen, iets waar Andrew Keen onder andere voor pleit in zijn boek The Cult of the Amateur. Hij zou initiatieven als Hulu en PluggedIn zeker toejuichen.
Al met al is het dus wachten totdat de “big companies” toestemming geven om de content op PluggedIn ook in Europa te bekijken. Tot die tijd is het simpelweg PluggedOut.
